Re: Mumonkan Case 5

The koan seems to focus on the man hanging from a tree by his teeth and the life-and-death question. But there is another person in the koan - the person who sees the man hanging from a tree by his teeth and asks the life-and-death question. What sort of person sees a man hanging from a tree by his...

Re: Mumonkan Case 5

My teacher always said, in reference to this koan "100% become the man in the tree" :D I would add that if you don't do that, then all you do is sit there thinking about it and then perhaps muttering something about what you're thinking about, thereby opening your mouth and failing. Or just dismiss ...

About the Zen Practice:

Do we aware of nothing?

or

do we aware of everything?

Could you decide pls..
Neither. We stop making "I, my, me, we" to begin with. "I am aware" is already a mistake because of the "I am" part.

Re: Mumonkan Case 5

"If the man in the tree does not answer, he fails; and if he does answer, he falls and loses his life. Now what shall he do?" My teacher posed that question to me like this: The person under the tree has a gun, if you do not answer, he will shoot you and you'll die. If you open your mouth to answer...

Re: Zen Practice

if we have understood what is the practice, how much percentage of the way is completed? If you understand a journey described by the map, how much of that journey have you completed? Could easily be none. :D What happens to instant enlightenment? I would say that depends on how you define "enlight...

Still, I wonder if and how others understand this doctrine. From consciousness as a requisite condition comes name-&-form. From name-&-form as a requisite condition come the six sense media. Without knowing the explanation for this hypothesis, it could be argued that, at least in early human evolut...

Re: This Forum in Particular

There are other possibilities to which, for some reason(s), the read-only majority seem unwilling to avail themselves. It causes me to wonder why, having made a specific effort to become a member here, one would not then continue that effort by participating, contributing, engaging. Read-only major...

They are already here but don't post much because most of the forum is non-zense. Why would a view that “most of the forum is non-zense.” dissuade or prevent someone from posting? If you include yourself as one of the “already here” who don’t post much, would you care to expand a bit on...

Re: This Forum in Particular

Better than Buddhist Forums in general, of course, is Buddhist forums in particular. What's in particular tickling me is Zen Buddhist forums. Not that there's anything great in them. For that, there'd have to be great practitioners in them. Oh, well. --Joe I think Joe’s right, a great Zen Buddhist ...

. . . when one awakens, everything may stop,
Is this from personal experience or from the teachings? I don’t remember hearing or reading about dreams stopping upon awakening, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

"May" being the key word here, which means Maybe. :)

I prefer people who actually behave appropriately. Alcoholism is not a behavior. Drinking alcohol is a behavior. Abstaining from that behavior is one of the basic five precepts. I generally don’t take spiritual advice from people that can’t even follow them. And it’s not the only one he broke eithe...

Doesn't it bother anyone here that he was a known alcoholic?
Yes. He could talk the talk but didn't walk the walk. Would much rather listen to someone who can do both. :)
