Re: Alan Watts on meditation

I prefer people who actually behave appropriately. Alcoholism is not a behavior. Drinking alcohol is a behavior. Abstaining from that behavior is one of the basic five precepts. I generally don’t take spiritual advice from people that can’t even follow them. And it’s not the only one he broke eithe...

On the contrary, it leaves people who talk the talk and walk the walk. :)

The walk that wise men walk. If you like him, that's fine. Go for it. I prefer people who actually behave appropriately. Wise man don't judge, they seek to understand. :hatsoff: ~Wei Wu Wei Judging is entirely appropriate when you are determining who to listen to and who not to listen to, as the Bu...

Doesn't it bother anyone here that he was a known alcoholic?
Yes. He could talk the talk but didn't walk the walk. Would much rather listen to someone who can do both. :)

Re: Who are you?

I'm Karl. Good to meet you. :namaste: My teacher would say, "A name is just a label." My teacher said "That's just your body, who are YOU!" :) Fair play to your teacher spike. I'm still Karl though. Fully Karl. Every fibre is Karl. And of course Karl is a series of arising and ceasing conditions, w...

What to do about Zen teachers and controversial behavior
Dump em and find a new teacher. :D

Re: Bodhidharma's Wall

The master first stayed at Shaolin Temple for nine years. He instructed the Second Patriarch: "Don’t hyperventilate over external affairs, environmental conditions, or internal mental phenomena. Make your mind like a wall (xin ru qiangbi 心如牆壁), and you will be able to enter the Way." Bodhidharma's ...

Re: Zen or nonzense

Honestly, I find this strange. You'll only see the Lounge posts if you go to active topics of visit the forum. If you visit the main page, you'll only see the "serious" posts. And the post count on the site is low enough you'll never need to go to active topics. I always view posts from "new posts"...

Re: Zen or nonzense

Zen Space should not be a music video site, a photo gallery, or merely a place where “Anything at all goes here.” In Buddhist terms, it’s idle chatter. As it is, the Lounge represents over 50% of all posts and some members spend most (50-70%!) of their time and posts in the Lounge. And this is expr...

Re: Leaving a teacher (wondering what the experienced practitioners have done/learned)

Maybe this is my issue - I want this "I've had enough" delineation to be clear and firm to me, in my mind. Maybe that's why I formally want to "quit" instead of just stop giving and going? You could just leave and stop giving and then write a letter "formally" quitting. That would avoid dramatic co...

Re: What is "enlightenment"

Quoting scriptural "chapter and verse", though, is no sign of understanding. In fact, a teacher like Bernie would ask for something different: it doesn't have to be original, but it does have to be authentic. Which is why you really can't learn zen over the internet or just by reading books. Probab...

Enlightenment, nirvana, awakening, unbinding, cessation, suchness, thusness, unveiling, etc. All just different fingers pointing at the same thing! Crystal, The recently late Bernie Glassman Roshi used to say that, " Saying that you can't express something is a cop-out. If you really understand or e...

Kicking out teachers? Huh?...I doubt very much that will change anything for the better... It will bring the caliber of the forum down another level, which is not a good thing.
