Re: Mindar

So what is the test for consciousness? What makes a neural network like the brain have consciousness? Where one believes that a machine network does not? Also, with advancing tech such as the quantum computer, with spin, superposition, quantum entanglement, Qubits The landscape of AI changes quite d...

Re: confirmation

So, Kosher food is just Kosher and doesn't need to be confirmed by others However, a person is not Kosher food. A person needs some guidance to understand what one experiences. After all, there are many things out there one can experience that isn't Kensho When I had such an experience, I spoke with...

Re: The practice of Zazen

A "description" or instruction depends on the target audience, knowing Jundo he usually is motivated to get people to the root and both me and him acknowledge there are ppl for who Practise comes natural and don't need any prerequisite instructions, but if one does then ofcourse Jundo would give it...

Re: The practice of Zazen

Thank you for your replies. Yes, Jundo is not wrong. But, he ignored all that comes before Shikantaza. One can not just come and do Shikantaza without some prior training. Just like a baby must learn to crawl before it can learn to walk. His presentation was to want everyone to do Shikantaza without...

The practice of Zazen

I know that this topic has probably been beaten to death. Was on Facebook, saw Jundo Cohen on one of those Zen pages. There were posts about how Shikantaza was suppose to be done. It was likened to the big blue sky. But, isn't it a focused mind?? One starts by counting breathe or watching the breath...

Re: Beginner Question

Sword of Manjushri is Wisdom. (True-)Wisdom comes from effective, correct practice. Usually a teacher and sangha will help, most maximally. ;) Yes, we can make various "resolves", and promises to ourselves, outside of correct practice (considering Zen Buddhist practice, here). But the outcome may b...

Re: Trying to live a right life

So what do you do when a panhandler approaches you asking for something? Looking upon my experiences with such people in my past, I move on. Knowing that I may have the compassion, I know that I do not have the wisdom to help them. Like I told my daughter, just try to do what you believe is right f...

Re: Trying to live a right life

I still give away $2 bills. They're so unusual that some recipients glare at them a few moments: Real? Fake? Counterfeit? Play-Money? ;-) Just give. All's swell, --Joe Just give? Then does it become something that is just another form of reaction?? Nothing there to be mindful of? Just going through...

Re: grace

I was reading a classic book on Tibetan Buddhism and read the following description of the “direct path”, that liberation is “without any apparent preparation.” This seems to echo the Zen saying that “Enlightenment is an accident. Practice makes us accident prone.” So my question is: Is an “acciden...

Living a life that others follow ... is that leading? It is hard to give of oneself to people we try to ignore as we pass by Relating to them when all they want is money from you is even tougher I remember giving to one individual and he commented by about ethnicity Of course, I didn't single him ou...

koans don't focus, they are alive How can they be alive? Aren't you alive? Koans don't breath, eat, reproduce, or anything which is defined as life Your question is simply unrelated to my question. But, you may do as you please and see things as you want That is what makes life interesting

What benefit comes from throwing a Koan at people? It is neither theirs to wrestle nor theirs to answer And where is the other end? No teacher? Re: Trying to live a right life

It has nothing to do with fear. It just makes sense to avoid it. Sure, when conditions allow for this avoidance Someone once said that the lamp is connected to the floor and the floor is connected to the building which is connected to the ground which is connected to the earth which is connected to...

Unfortunately, I still have separation I don't walk in dangerous neighborhoods and say that I will not fear There are places in Brookl...

Re: For Avisitor...Is Zen thinking of no-thought?

I actually think no thought is much to say about no thought. How is your practice going? Have you talked with others who are interested in Zen Buddhism? I have looked at all the stuff on Facebook. Lots of snappy sayings and quotes Lots of professing love and compassion Worst part is that everyone s...
