Re: Fruit Flies

.... Buddhism teaches that animals cannot practice, there is no if, ands or buts about this, as evidenced by Sheng Yen's talk posted above, and various other masters throughout history as well as various scriptures, etc. There is no maybe/maybe not either. I am not "talking past people's observatio...

Re: Fruit Flies

I just cleaned up 5 houses of birdpoo, so that the birds can be at peace here and ppl don't chase them away due to the poo. Same with spider nests, me and my neighbours have an agreement that only I clean/remove certain areas, so I can look out that there's no harm involved in cleaning. larry :560:...

Re: Fruit Flies

it is not appropriate to make statements such as “only humans can practice”. Sure it is, that is Buddhism. Sheng Yen thought it was entirely appropriate, because that's Buddhism. How can Sheng Yen, Dōgen, the Buddha know that this is so? How can someone think they know better, probably know better,...

What distinguishes dailylife as a practice from daily life as it is?

Re: Fruit Flies

As regards to whether animals can practise, again I couldn't say that they can't, Master Sheng Yen says they can't. He said "Among all living beings only humans can practice". Dogen Zenji himself says "Of all births, human is best" The concept of “practice” may well be entirely a human contrivance ...

Re: Fruit Flies

Animals generally move out of the animal realm when their previous bad karma is exhausted, which is a very rare occurrence. Why do you say that it is a very rare occurrence? It is somewhat absurd to attach a timeline to this. How many kalpas and aeons have any of us been wandering through the six r...

That reminds me to make an addendum to my DNR card: No Pure Land rebirth dharanis to be recited over my dead or dying body.

I think all beings have the ability to practice the dharma hence the injunction against killing beings. I don't think that's the reason for the injunction against killing beings. Too simple, straightforward, obvious? Beings move throughout the six realms continuously, propelled by the creation and/...

I still have no success telling my cats not to kill moths/night-butterflies, they know birds are not food but they go beserk when a moth enters the house, I can catch 90% of them but sometimes they're just to quick. Even the shallow end can be deep.
Reminds me of Kōbun Chino Roshi who died with his young daughter as she was drowning in a shallow pool.
