Re: Calming the Mind

I find it difficult to form an opinion as to whether sits with peace/calm are really superior to sits with agitation/restlessness. Because calm feels like riding on top of the wave and agitation feels like (at best) swimming into the wave. So which is truly better? Thankfully I don’t have to form a ...

Re: Alan Watts on meditation

He was a celebrity author that fired up imaginations and turned people on to Zen, Taoism, as well as LSD, among other things. I kind of preferred Aldous Huxley, but Watts is still popular in the West for his portrayal of Zen. His idealization of the East however, is misleading and wrongheaded. We no...

Re: Alan Watts on meditation

He used his education and status as ordained minister rather than Zen dharma transmission; there are quite a few recognized "teachers" who do exactly the same today. I see no real reason to accept a surgically precise definition of what at "teacher" is in Zen. Even some of the patriarchs didn't hav...

Re: Alan Watts on meditation

I remember The Book (subtitled: On the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are) fondly. I didn’t understand it all, but it seemed important - to me. It and Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse were two books that led me to Zen Buddhism. Alan had his faults and he wasn’t a Zen teacher, but he was bodhisattva. He u...

Re: Does heaven exist?

It's a good question. Buddha most definitely taught the holy life which leads to the deathless. But unlike some other teachings, it is essentially not "earned", rather, it can be experienced, or not; which does not change the fact that birth, life, and death, don't exist at all in the conventional s...

Re: Alan Watts on meditation

It's a Middle Way thing, avoiding the excesses of too much or too little. In the middle is stillness, centeredness. We all know how boring that sounds and why they do what they do. It takes a Buddha to find a mundane thing and know it's really a jewel. I'm thankful for what's been given to me. You k...

Re: Alan Watts on meditation

... the intellect can very easily masquerade itself to emulate attainment. I wonder if that's all the majority of teachers in the West actually do. Why do you wonder that? Zen, as taught “in the West”, would be a sham if such were the case. Is this what you are suggesting, or something else? Perhap...

Re: Alan Watts on meditation

Watts had a very good intellectual knowledge of Zen nonetheless. To me that has some value, and I don't think he tried to make any outrageous claims about his attainment, like so many Buddhist teachers do. If he had, I'd be critical about it, as the intellect can very easily masquerade itself to emu...

Re: Mindfulness Meditation

GS EofH, The OP was addressed to Dharmawheel, Dhammawheel, and Zen1Space, just to get an idea who has done something described as "Mindfulness" - overwhelmingly Dhammawheel, the Theravada forum. I see, yes, OK, thanks. But anyway, speaking to our crowd here, please don't let any of us count out the...
