Re: The Misnomer of Greg Wonderwheel's "The Misnomer of Dogen's "Practice is Enlightenment""

if only it was a question of skillful means, what works best. hmm, that is the last thing we have never considered in this discussion. and, just what is medicine in the face of practice realization... it's just ridiculous. it is, isn't? And Welcome, Greg!!!! Hope you are able to stick around and co...

Re: Drawing & Painting

That's a very expressive, if somewhat horror-movie-ish skull, boda. I wonder, though, why do you, as an artist, dispense with composition, rule of thirds, etc, that photographers follow semireligiously and as a designer, you must've knowingly rejected? This object smack in the middle is of course co...

Re: The Misnomer of Greg Wonderwheel's "The Misnomer of Dogen's "Practice is Enlightenment""

I think this is an ancient theme in Zen, even before Dogen. But to my thick head it boils down to the simple question of skillful means. What helps best? A lie about golden leaves to entice the kids out of the burning house or just tell them there is no burning house and most likely watch them writh...

Re: Differing views of shikantaza

It's good to see the thread move in a more informative direction, but without Dosho Port or at least a student of his contributing, can we still have a sound balanced discussion? I don't suppose he could be enticed to join and engage in a debate?? I will write to him, and if anyone else knows him pe...

Re: Differing views of shikantaza

Let's please try to keep the thread on topic and not let it devolve into sniping. A mod has deleted a whole bunch of off-topic posts, which isn't really a fun thing to do for the mod or for the authors, I imagine. There are differing views of shikantaza. Let's see clearly what they are, what the ad...

I have some sort of a nondescript eurotrash accent. Cool, now I can read your posts with a dorky euro accent. Mind you, Americans are usually fooled that I am an Aussie native, so you don't have to change anything. Yes, Fuki is a natural. This is gonna make us rich!! And then we realise...

I'll start working on my Dutch Australian accent
Start your research with van Diemen's Land.

PS You might be shocked but I don't really have an Australian accent. 30 years Down Under didn't do the trick. I have some sort of a nondescript eurotrash accent. People generally cannot pick it.

Made possible by Zen Space's Therapeutic Complements to Zen... this could make zenspace popular, Dan make the call.

Re: Looking forward, not floorward

I think this enterprise is inherently hobbled by the fact of a part seeking to understand itself, let alone the whole, apart from the very real limitations to what can be known. We, mathematicians, are generally quite at peace with our very real epistemological limitations - is the Continuum Hypothe...

Fuki, you're (one-of-) the best! We ought to get together and slurp down some pasta, sometime. I suggest NYC! (I'm a New-World guy, what can I say; but The Old-Country could be fun sometime, too ...and all you'd have to do is drop South, approximately). (BTW, a feller I miss here is Guo Gu. I might...

Re: Towards a new morality?

Came across this lady just now, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joan_Jacobs_Brumberg A review of her book The Body Project: An Intimate History of American Girls: A hundred years ago, women were lacing themselves into corsets and teaching their daughters to do the same. The ideal of the day, however, ...

I've been around half a dozen Buddhist forums or so... ...and it's time for me to take a break... The most common errors i see in understanding, and this goes for myself as well (in no specific order), a lack of finding the Middle Way (1) Antinomianism (2) Eternalism (3) Perennialism (4) "Nothing i...

Interesting that Sparrow has Bob's seal of approval.

I wonder if seals of approval are overrated, even the good quality ones? Richard Baker had Shunryu Suzuki's and Osel Tendzin had Chogyam Trungpa's.

Re: Zazen Is Good For Nothing

I think this seeming conflict of goal vs. non-goal to be the biggest red herring in online Zen discussion. More time is wasted on it than anything. Of course one practices in a manner permeated by deep aspiration and lofty goal: the Four Vows are the foundation and ultimate teaching of Zen. It is a...

This exercise would be a real sharing. Can we pull it off? Re: Mental States and Zen

Hi, If I understand the discussion, I feel that the body and mind divide the subject/object, judge the objects which thus result mentally, feeling attractions and aversions, longings, fears, frustrations and all the rest. In the satisfaction and balance of sitting, the hard borders of subject/objec...

Ok, examples, since you insist: I seek to behave nicely, make the world a bit nicer for the other people in it, sit Zazen beyond greed anger and division, avoid smoked meats and spicy foods now on doctors advice. I try to learn from from past mistakes, do as I can not to repeat in the future. Apart ...

Hmm... I said that it makes to sense to hold an opinion about something one doesn't really understand and disparaging another practice can be harmful to people. You say you agree, so why did you express an opinionabout something you don't really understand and disparage a practice? I would never di...
