Re: Gaofeng Yuanmiao on the Path

Yep... lots of setbacks seeming and real and we persist, tenaciously. One moment at a time. Even when we don't.

Meido's/Torei's advice to recall the Vows as often as possible, has been helpful.

Re: Good discussion about post-awakening cultivation over at DW

James, I agree with all of your post, except this sentence which leaves me in doubt: Awakening is of little consequence if cultivation is central. I would say that cultivation is only of consequence post awakening. Prior one is really polishing the brick into the mirror, notwithstanding all assertio...

Re: Never Surrender!

It's a thorny issue and I suspect different lineages have different takes on it and use a variety of skilful means (and sadly sometimes, unskilful ones) to make use of surrender, submission and trust. For me, it came up in my very first Zen retreat. I went in thinking I had Zen pretty much figured o...

Re: Psychodelics and Buddhism: Lion Roar article and Brad Warner's response + a few thoughts

Very interesting responses, Folks, and thank you for sharing your story, narwhal, as a fellow rider, it hit just a bit deeper, hope you're OK now. Pablo, when you say 'it's not Zen', it rings of Spiritual Bypassing for me, are you familiar with the term? One of the teachers I've had the privilege to...

Psychodelics and Buddhism: Lion Roar article and Brad Warner's response + a few thoughts

https://www.lionsroar.com/the-new-wave-of-psychedelics-in-buddhist-practice/ http://hardcorezen.info/lions-roar-has-killed-buddhism/5945 Read the articles first. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say 'not always so.' Yes, of course Buddhist practice doesn't require psychedelics, but is psychede...

Good discussion about post-awakening cultivation over at DW

https://dharmawheel.net/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=29215 Perhaps some folks here have something to add too. From my side, just a little anecdote that convinced me that it is imperative to have close contact with a trusted teacher at times of intense practice. I had very close contact with a teacher 2003-2...

Re: Hello from Madrid, Spain

Welcome, Pablo!!

If you'd like to share something about your practice, or how it interacts with life, or anything else Zen related, sometimes we do have good exchanges here!

In any case, hope you find something useful for you and all the best with your practice.

Re: photographs you have made.

I really like this street image, Fruit! (and appreciate the kind words, Fruit and Larry).

The composition and especially the light, work very well indeed. The shadow of the passer-by adds an extra element, juxtaposing the still subject and the unseen moving person. Blahblah… Excellent!!!

Re: photographs you have made.

The photos also lie. 100% of women in the photos wear a hijab (I think there is a tourist in a cute hat), whereas in reality it was maybe 80%. The Queen, for instance, doesn't.

And here are some boring photos. But I assure you the places they depict were not boring at all.

Re: Fare Thee Well

. . . too much of what Master Hua called 'head talking Zen', which often devolves into heat not light. I'm with you... Dear Laysitter, Gandhi comes to mind: "Be the change you want to see.." This is such a small place, every member makes a difference. And we are basically just a sum of our few memb...

It's Essex. Lots of summer girls there  That's only 229 km for me, where is our floating sangha/fries bar located currently so I can swim to that point. I won't take a plane or car since that's destructive to our planet, Dan is flying too much anyway, so I have to swim to pay for his sins :lol...

Re: a conversation between master xuyun and grandmaster lingyuan

Dear Guo Gu, thank you for posting this. I did indeed spend some years just 'a rock soaking in cold water'. I guess it felt like a respite after all the daily stresses. Which can be a good thing, except that I noticed I was becoming even more irritable and less capable of facing them and kinda wishi...

PS In direct experience, there is no enjoyment and no non-enjoyment. IAG

PPS But yeah, I will!
Perhaps we'll see some nice (future) photographs of your trip. :)
Aha! Drifting into the "future"! -100 direct knowing points for you, Buster!
