Re: The practice of Zazen

In the end all "meditation" descriptions are about just being aware of awareness (or that one is aware) all the various techniques and trainings and all the books refer back to the most obvious and simple. But due to habit energies (distractions) a multitude of different "explanations" and practise...

Some of the bacteria they may carry include salmonella, E. coli, and listeria. These three germs each cause food ...

Re: Fruit Flies

I left some grapes and the countertop compost container improperly covered and now have a healthy community of fruit flies. I know that they have very short lives and a rapid rate of reproduction and that this group is probably a multigenerational family ... “children”, “parents”, “grand-parents” a...

Re: Trying to live a right life

i like the gift certificate idea, how are they received? The food pantry where i volunteer occasionally has grocery stoe gift cards we give to folks in the elderly/disabled home up the street, they are very much appreciated. Yes, always appreciated. Likewise, donations to or volunteership at worthy...

Re: Trying to live a right life

Agreed, but what do you do? Me personally? As a former psychotherapist for ten years my inclination is never to give money. Worked for a while at a drug and alcohol rehab clinic for ex-offenders, and don't want to risk fueling that population. I used to buy McDonalds gift certificates back in the d...

Re: Trying to live a right life

So what do you do when a panhandler approaches you asking for something? It would be good to have options. Most panhandlers are homeless. Most feel they have no other option. It is not clear to me what percent use the money for drugs or alcohol, but some surveys identify 60% of homeless as addicts....

Secret Oral Teachings
It's no longer esoteric in Dutchyland
Calling it "secret" and then publishing it in a book--kinda let's the cat out of the bag, so to speak. Oxymoronic title, too.
(P.S. no cat should have to live out of a bag. Or dog!)

I was reading a classic book on Tibetan Buddhism and read the following description of the “direct path”, that liberation is “without any apparent preparation.”
Secret Oral Teachings in Tibetan Buddhist Sects (1967)? A good read.

Re: Zen is all of Life

It is now against the law to wear a burqa or a niqab in the Netherlands . . . Full face mc helmets too, in certain places. I'd wear a burka out of protest but I'm not sure if that's offensive since only woman wear them . . Sounds like a loophole if men can wear them. Selfie, please? P.S. Good Tilop...

Re: grace

No confirmation, no awakening, that is. Kudos! An individual's experience of awakening cannot be erased. The student did all the heavy lifting, and was the one and only experiencer. Confirmed or not, the experience stands on it's own. The experience can be regarded as quintessentially nothing speci...

Re: grace

. . . a teacher is needed to confirm awakening, . . True. This should be obvious: this is and should be strictly the purview of the teacher. . . . and to guard against a random state being a mere flash in the pan of something much lesser, imaginary, or unrelated . . . False. A "random state" and a ...

Re: Zen is all of Life

As Sartre said, 'Hell is other people."

Even better: "Three o'clock is always too early or too late for anything you want to do."
