Re: Zazen Is Good For Nothing

And yet, on the Dogen path, surely there must be a "stage" where the newbie is no longer a newbie & something slowly/suddenly "clicks"? Could you say more about that? Perhaps from your own experience. Of course, one day faith becomes truth. Of course, such was truth all along. One of my Soto friend...

Re: Lewis Richmond on Shikantaza: Just Sitting, Going Nowhere

Body and Mind fell away for the fellow(s) (Dogen. And, the Roshi, I presume). Sure, anything they say, recommend, instruct, or criticize after this is bound to be true when seen from the point of view of "Body and Mind fallen away". It's disingenuous of them to leave this fact out of what they say,...

Re: Lewis Richmond on Shikantaza: Just Sitting, Going Nowhere

PS - By the way, we add a Tibetan Practice, Tonglen, in our Sangha because it was recommended by, and is helpful too, folks with physical disabilities and others. I am conservative in mixing and matching, but there are some good things to learn from each other. We have Metta Practice too, which is n...

Lovely. Sharing and learning from each other, the sameness and difference, is a wonderful way.

Re: Lewis Richmond on Shikantaza: Just Sitting, Going Nowhere

Wonderful article! Lew Richmond has a big heart and compassion, it comes through here. I've seen him twice teaching with Lama Palden, Zen Heart Vajra Heart. This was back in 2011, I don't know what became of the project. I suspect that individual responsibilities came to bear/bare. Unfortunately, t...

Lewis Richmond on Shikantaza: Just Sitting, Going Nowhere

Chikudo Lewis Richmond, a teacher in the Suzuki Lineage and a successor to Sojun Mel Weitsman, has an excellent article on Shikantaza in the latest Lion's Roar. It begins: " The Zen practice of just sitting, says Lewis Richmond, doesn’t help us to reach our destination. It allows us to stop having o...

Re: Where did Guo Go Go ? ?

(Dan, I hope it is okay to briefly respond? Please delete if not appropriate) Hi Boda, I think the difference between a "job" or "hobby," a "career" and a "vocation" or "calling" is as vast as heaven and earth. At least, I feel so and I think many other clergy, artists and the like do. Mark Unno, pr...

Re: Where did Guo Go Go ? ?

(Dan, I hope it is okay to briefly respond? Please delete if not appropriate) Hi Boda, I believe it is actually quite ordinary. Many folks in my own community ... fire fighters and nurses, a doctor doing volunteer overseas, artists about their art, car racers about car racing, musicians about their ...

Re: Hitler Sells But I’m Not Buying

I think Brad makes a good point, and yet not. I posted this on his facebook ... What you write, Brad, has an important truth, but is also very dangerous. In this "if it bleeds it leads" 24-hour news cycle, stories are being written and pushed by both sides to get ratings. HOWEVER, you fail to mentio...

Re: Now is the best of all times

First, samsara is samsara, we can't fix it (perhaps tweak it a bit). Second, our way is to see through samsara. Then, samsara is samsara, yet it is not. Third, although samsara will always be samsara, and although we can come to see through it, we should never give up the effort at tweaking. Fourth,...

Re: Where did Guo Go Go ? ?

Yes, it is a calling. A religious calling, as important to me as my own children and life itself. (Sounds corny, or like an exaggeration, but I have reason to know that is true from my experiences). Since I’m not permitted to question this maybe you would volunteer the reason you know this is true....

Re: Disagreeing with Greg Wonderwheel's "The Misnomer of Dogen's "Practice is Enlightenment" [MOD EDIT]

Practice is making yourself susceptible to seeing that practice is not far from the awakened state. I don't think that Dogen could have -- or has -- said it better. At least not in English. --Joe p.s. And, let's not be disingenuous: Dogen awakened first , under a Ch'an master who had his own ways a...

But then, it is best to be in good standing with fellow teachers, such as those who belong to AZTA, if one is to recruit from them. As the above comment was made, I would like to respond. Yes, the AZTA kicked me out for complaining too loudly about their lax ethics policy and loose response to Mr. ...

Re: Where did Guo Go Go ? ?

So, you end up with losers like me who feel that the Internet is their place of calling. You feel it’s your calling to post on forums like this one? By the way, yes, I feel that I became a Zen priest because I have a calling to keep the flame of the beautiful and powerful ways of Soto Zen and Ol' D...

Re: Where did Guo Go Go ? ?

It is true. I have tried to get so many teachers interested here and on the facebook groups, no luck. Not even the second rate hacks would be caught dead in such places. So, we beggers can't be choosers. Gassho J What is mainly the respons you get, no time, or anything else? Based on discussions of...

Re: Disagreeing with Greg Wonderwheel's "The Misnomer of Dogen's "Practice is Enlightenment" [MOD EDIT]

Why exactly is it "very very important" ? Earlier you wrote to Gregory Wonderwheel "I think this is all a tempest in a teapot actually. Practice and Enlightenment are one. You are right too." A very very important tempest in a teapot? I meant that the debate here was a tempest in a teapot about wha...

Re: Disagreeing with Greg Wonderwheel's "The Misnomer of Dogen's "Practice is Enlightenment" [MOD EDIT]

Hi Spikey,

It is actually a very very important, if not the central question, for Soto folks, with great ramifications in understanding Dogen. I hope that Greg and others will continue to join in.
