Re: Seeking Buddha, Non-Seeking Buddha

I am afraid that I keep coming back to the basics, again and again ... so another pillow for your cats! ;-) Dogen is actually not that hard to fathom when you see what he was on about. Kind of like Picasso in that way too, bend up a guitar, twist up a table ... Gassho, J To test my own curiosity I ...

Re: Study finds meditation may not make you a better person

no data come to us neutral. everything comes to us already theorized, framed with a particular agenda. so a lot of it has to do with how the "study" is conducted, its parameters, scope; the participants, etc. my two cents. guo gu Agreed, it's like letting people taste your ice cream on a very hot s...

Re: Seeking Buddha, Non-Seeking Buddha

I am just finishing up the manuscript to my new book Zensplaining Dogen, to be called "Letters from Dogen." When you read that, all about Dogen will become clear. Here is a clue: Think of him as a Zenny Jazzman or Picasso bending notes and images of the standard Teachings. In any case, this "non-se...

Re: Seeking Buddha, Non-Seeking Buddha

Ah, the old days! I do remember you getting into fights with him. For me, I can mostly remember the shock I felt at meeting the "professional" buddhists over there and deciding that that was definitely not where I wanted to go. And I didn't. I aggravated some injuries sitting Zazen, took Alexander ...

Re: Dosho Port on the Great Question

From an excellent post by Dosho Port: When a question really begins to cook in us, throwing ourselves into it is not a matter of being macho or of discipline, dogma, or technique. It is about living through the heart’s innermost request . And a sincere eagerness to do whatever it takes arises spont...

Heh, the first noble truth of Buddhist forums: Don't debate Malcolm.   I remember my first days on E-Sangha, I was a real "know it all" back in the days so I had plenty of debates trying to ego boost my awesome "knowledge" of things, I did enjoy talking with him the most though, I r...

Re: Seeking Buddha, Non-Seeking Buddha

the way is not difficult as long as one does not pick and choose... when there's privileging of one over another, it doesn't matter how one practices or what method/non-method one uses, deeply ingrained patterns of better or worse, good or bad, superior or inferior, more or less... self flourishes!...

Re: Seeking Enlightenment in Zen

Yes, I agree. At the same time there are those who believe that one should just sit with things as the are, mind just as it is. They think the deluded mind is the same mind that sees reality just as it is. It’s a fine line, jails are full of people who have done nothing wrong. Mass murderers and ot...

I am still working on my treatise, 'Lobsters Guide To Religions'. :106: http://newbuddhist.com/discussion/19819/lobsters-guide-to-religions Unfortunately I may not have the correct approach, understanding or rigorous objectivity required. :114: :waving: Haha loved it, not yet stand up material but ...

It is like a buffalo that passes through a latticed window. Its head, horns, and four legs all pass through. Why can't its tail pass through as well? Here's a tail :D A Sir Bob poem. Metaphors for life are bountiful – perhaps this one will still serve well: we seem born into a prison, each awakens ...

https://qz.com/1184574/the-idea-that-everything-from-spoons-to-stones-are-conscious-is-gaining-academic-credibility Ofcourse consciousness is universal and whatever happens is an expression/manifestation of consciousness. Hence it's quite ridiculous to say this is conscious this is not conscious wh...

My point is that "non-seeking" is not meant to be a position or view to adopt (as is commonly done) negating the need for truly great aspiration, vows, intent, and effort.
Right you mean from self-referential thinking, Zhaozhou's dog is good medicine for this.

Re: Whats your practice?

I find online discussion of certain aspects of Zen Buddhism, such as kensho, satori, koans, etc. to be exercises in futility. It's really why I feel Zen fora in general are not easy to keep going. I am really not interested in opinions about the things I only discuss with my teacher. I am happy to ...

Re: poems

I enjoyed that poem Dan, very creative thanks. I just don't get the carpenter's son's reference. Jesus was a carpenter right but a carpenter's son's birth, I read that as God being the carpenter instead of Jesus lol In the Gospels, Joseph's occupation is mentioned only once. The Gospel of Matthew[1...
