The Search for the Bull

Post by loves' the unjust » Wed Dec 19, 2018 5:15 pm

The Search for the Bull

In the pasture of this world, I endlessly push aside the tall grasses in search of the bull.
Following unnamed rivers, lost upon the interpenetrating paths of distant mountains,
My strength failing and my vitality exhausted, I cannot find the bull.
I only hear the locusts chirring through the forest at night.

Comment: The bull never has been lost. What need is there to search? Only because of separation from my true nature, I fail to find him. In the confusion of the senses I lose even his tracks. Far from home, I see many crossroads, but which way is the right one I know not. Greed and fear, good and bad, entangle me.

Reminded me of what Guo Go said
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=515#p9768

And Sheng Yen;
Be soft in your practice. Think of the method as a fine silvery stream, not a raging waterfall. Follow the stream, have faith in its course.
It will go on its own way, meandering here, trickling there. It will find the grooves, the cracks, the crevices.
Just follow it. Never let it out of your sight. It will take you.

Whatever you do, don't confuse the first and seventh stages. The amount of space between them is incomprehensible.
"The Way needs no cultivation, just do not defile. What is defilement? When with a mind of birth and death one acts in a contrived way, then everything is a defilement. If one wants to know the Way directly: Ordinary Mind is the Way!"

Enver, the "trick" is to discern and distinguish the "bull" from the bull.

But awakening in the Zen Buddhist way is sudden, and extremely noticeable ;) . Still, a teacher is regularly needed to check this development, lest the wrong kind of bull be settled-for.

As I see it.

Be safe!,

strong practice,

We already do so; there’s no other way.

Who can say how many colors life has? However many or few, there cannot be some colors missing. The life we live always has all its colors.

Birds (except those who pull worms from the ground) see ultraviolet light, or at least bluer light than humans do/can.

It has to do with the birds having evolved to feed on nectar of certain flowers which have evolved to reflect a UV color that the birds key-onto. Probably a co-evolution: bird-flower; flower:bird.

Is there something in this for Humans, and for Zen practitioners? Well, some people eat birds.

Thanks, a lovely photo, James.

We have them here in the desert, both Datura and moth. Two green seven-striped horn-tailed caterpillars recently disappeared into the ground on my property, to pupate, dropping from a Desert Willow. Maybe they've already emerged as Hawk Moths, or Sphinx Moths (Hawk Moths, I think, probably).

At nights when it's open during Summer Monsoon, the Datura flower scent is haunting; it's as if the whole island of the Big Island of Hawai'i has pulled up next to us.

An old book I have tells that people of old used to place Datura flowers on the pillow at night at sleep-time. It's said that inhaling the flower perfume gave them "Interesting colorful dreams". Dunno. Of course, parts of the plant are deadly poison. Maybe don't try this at home. ;)

Is the "Bull" somewhere in THIS, too? Yes; some people eat the bull (or at least the gelded steer).

When you find yourself, live the life with all it's colors.

that was what i supposed to say

i was good at living life as the like when i was a young boy,

then life has changed, i get knowledge,

my search begin,

and i forget to live the life with all it's colors.

That's common enough. IME, the search is worth it.
