Joan Halifax, Netherlands - September 4th-9th, 2018

Post by fuki » Thu Jul 05, 2018 2:20 pm

Just booked a retreat on September 4-9, 2018, Cadzand, the Netherlands.

Few places left, perhaps I'll meet some internet dutchies there in form.

Marcel,

Good for you!, I'm delighted to learn of your commitment. I wish you a wonderful sesshin! Wishes for strong practice for you and all attending.

Joan Roshi is the teacher of my present teacher here in a Soto Zen sangha. He is one of her Dharma heirs, and is Sensei. At the end of September, 7 or 8 people here will take Jukai to close a zazenkai day (these are the people for whom I've made the wood lathe-turned rakusu rings very recently); the Precepts Master will be a priest who will travel here from Joan's center in New Mexico, one Rev. "Joshin". Our teacher will officiate and teach at the zazenkai, but cannot confer the Refuges and Precepts because he is not a priest but is a lay-person, so the priest is kindly coming to carry out that service.

I have never met Joan Halifax Roshi. I'm a bit envious of the opportunity you have! ;)

All best,

--Joe

Joe, thank you kindly for your inspirations!
I'm 2nd on the waiting list, as usual they don't update info regarding retreats that accurately so I'm on the list.
Funny how I got to the retreat though, I wasn't planning anything as in the connection with the recent "finding the right teacher" thread...

I found myself for unknown reasons scrolling the list on this thread very fast, too fast to 'consciousl'y read anything, when suddenly stopped and noticed the name "Petra Hubbeling" who turned out to be a dutch Buddhist interestingly without having a home and just goes from place to place, you can even ask her to look after your home (handy for my cats when I'm away I thought) but since a few months she recides in the Upaya Zen Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico, reading her bio got me on her twitter, where the retreat was mentioned, so I just booked it, I like those "coincedences" it's how I meet everyone and anything, without having anything in mind, or a "mind" at all

I was aware of the connection with your current sangha, which also "helped"
I'll let you know if I make it off the waiting list, otherwise I might still drop a mail to see if I can meet Joan or help out without taking part in the retreat, it's a relatively small trip for me + it resembles my home town, silent, serene and next to the sea.

Marcel, really, from all the indications, it seems that you are meant to be there, on sesshin. Good "luck"! --Joe

Joe, thank you, I would never argue with an astronomer about what's in the stars. :)
