With friends in Germany

Post by Meido » Sun Aug 26, 2018 8:11 am

I was pleased to meet (in the flesh) our esteemed leader Dan this past weekend! We practiced together at the annual sesshin in Laufen, Germany.

I think I am just high on all the endorphins my brain was desperately trying to relieve the leg pain with :D

A precious opportunity. Thank you, Roshi, the helpers and the many wonderful participants. :bow2: :bow2: :bow2:

Did you do some hoflaufen (and photographing) to oil the knee Dan or too tired to explore the surrounding nature?

There was enough kinhin and free time too (but no photos except before and after the retreat). The sits and the entire programme were very well structured and reasonable. Even gentle, I'd say.

So I don't think it was any more demanding on the knees than other retreats I've sat. The difference was that I hadn't sat any for quite some years and on top of that I am older and stiffer.

And besides, who doesn't like a little drama.. :? 8-)

I know how you "hate" it when people can't keep their minds to themselves

I can think of a few reasons why, hehe... But we can print one anyway! :115:

Fuki, yes, by the end we all had that generic original Zen face :113: and bad hair.

Isn't it? I do wonder about all the Aikido garb though. Was the sesshin after a training camp or something?

I was wondering the same thing... Dan and another had white t-shirts. ppl in my sangha, incl teachers, stopped wearing robes long ago. Other sangha do use robes for all tho there is a lot of mixing in some. They say, the aikido skirts are very comfortable.

The traditional garments worn by students in the pics such as hakama (the "skirt," actually baggy pants) are not Aikido clothing. They are just standard traditional Japanese garments, and used for all kinds of training activities (Aikido happens to be one of these). Zen laypersons commonly wear such clothing also.

There are practical, training related reasons why these garments are still used e.g. the manner in which they support breath cultivation, the sitting posture, etc. Folks who don't have them, though, are welcome in our group to wear comfortable clothing of any kind in neutral colors. Most beginners obviously won't have such clothing when they start.

As for actual robes (koromo) these are traditionally only worn by ordained folks, though in some Western Zen groups there has developed a custom of having laypersons wear "sitting robes" that are essentially similar to those worn by monastics (though lacking some of the crucial bits e.g. obi). I am not sure what the reasons for this are. I have wondered if it arose from a desire by Japanese teachers who settled here that there be a uniformity (or monastic familiarity) of dress and atmosphere in the zendo.

The manner in which the traditional garments support aspects of practice is actually a rather deep and interesting subject. We need not be stuck on such things, of course...as long as we have fully grasped and mastered that subject, we could choose replacement garments that function in a similar manner. But I've yet to see decent alternatives, so we've just continued to use the practice clothing we inherited.
