Layman Pang and Hanshan

Post by lindama » Wed Jul 11, 2018 7:22 am

well.... I'm not so good with names. I remember best what they said or what their dream was....

I confused Huang Po with Layman Pang.... both old friends... until I remembered. Huang Po, this very body the Buddha.

and.... Layman Pang and the stories with his daughter.... as I have heard, Layman Pang was walking, he fell. after that his dauhger fell.... someone asked: what are you doing? Daugher replied: "I'm helping Daddy". Layman Pang was much talked about in my zen family. The way I heard it was: "every snow flake falls in the right place".

here's a quote from Wiki/Cleary?Blue Cliff REcord.... hard to tell what is what....
When Layman Pang took leave of Yao Mountain, Shan ordered ten Chan travellers to escort him to the gate. The Layman pointed to the snow in the air and said, "Good snow -- flake by flake doesn't fall in any other place." At the time one of the Chan travellers named Chuan said, "Where do they fall?" The Layman slapped him once. Chuan said, "Even a layman shouldn't be so coarse." The Layman said, "Though you call yourself a Chan traveller this way, the King of Death still won't let you go." Chuan said, "How about you, Layman?" Again the Layman slapped him and said, "Your eyes see like a blind man, your mouth speaks like a mute."[6]
so, it put Hanshan into perspect, just now. About two weeks ago, I finally received a book on pre-order by Peter Levitt (a facebook friend) and Kazuaki Tanahashi... who knew.... I ordered it bec I wanted to support Peter and know Hanshan.

I gave my daughter a Hanshan poem when she was still at school. She said she didn't understand it but hung it on her bedroom wall.

Down to the stream
to watch the jade flow
or back to the cliff
to sit on a boulder.
Mind like a lone cloud
clinging to nothing;
what do I need in the faraway world?

After school and university she went off to work in Hong Kong, Singapore & San Francisco. Now, twenty years later, she's left the corporate world to live quietly in the English countryside.

The poem still hangs on her wall.
