48 Great Vows of Dharmakara Bodhisattva

Vow 1
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
In Western Pure Land
In my own Buddha-country
If hells exist there
Or states of the animal
Or hungry ghost realms
The perfect enlightenment
May I not attain
When I attain Buddhahood

Vow 2
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If in my country
Humans and devas should fall
In three evil realms
Again after birth and death
If I fail my vows
The perfect enlightenment
May I not attain
When I attain Buddhahood

Vow 3
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If in my country
Humans and devas are not
Color of pure gold
Are not genuine supreme
Not identical
The perfect enlightenment
May I not attain
When I attain Buddhahood

Vow 4
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If in my country
Humans and devas are not
Of one appearance
No difference in beauty
Not fair or ugly
No perfect enlightenment

Vow 5
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
Humans and devas
Cannot remember past lives
Or evolution
Not even knowing events
Of hundred thousand
Nayuta years of kalpas
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 6
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
In my Buddha-land
If the humans and devas
Have no divine eye
To see a hundred thousand
Kotis nayutas
Of those many Buddha-lands
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 7
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
In my Buddha-land
If the humans and devas
Have no Divine Ear
Hearing teachings of at least
A hundred thousand
Of kotis of nayutas
Of Divine teachings
And not remember them all
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 8
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
In my Buddha-land
If the humans and devas
Don't know other's thoughts
At least all sentient beings
In hundred thousand
Of kotis of nayutas
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 9
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
In my Buddha-land
If the humans and devas
Have no great powers
To take step in one instant
Beyond a hundred
Thousand kotis nayutas
Of the Buddha-lands
No perfect enlightenment

Vow 10
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
In my Buddha-land
If the humans and devas
Become most selfish
Have thoughts of self-attachment
May I not attain
No perfect enlightenment

Vow 11
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
In my Buddha-land
If the humans and devas
Not dwell in the deep
Meditation Samadhi
Until Nirvana
The perfect enlightenment
May I not attain
When I attain Buddhahood

Vow 12
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
My light limited
And can not illuminate
A hundred thousand
Of kotis of nayutas
Of the Buddha-lands
The perfect enlightenment
May I not attain
When I attain Buddhahood

Vow 13
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If my lifespan short
Even to the extent of
A hundred thousand
Of kotis of nayutas
Of Kalpas of time
The perfect enlightenment
May I not attain
When I attain Buddhahood

Vow 14
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If the number known
Of shravavakas in land
Could only be known
Even if all beings and
Pratyekabuddhas
Living in this universe
Thousand million worlds
Should count them during hundred
Thousand of kalpas
The perfect enlightenment
May I not attain
When I attain Buddhahood

Vow 15
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
In my Buddha-land
That for humans and devas
Life is limited
Except accordance with vows
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 16
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
In my Buddha-land
If the humans and devas
Hear of wrongdoing
Or evil or sinful acts
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 17
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If Buddhas in worlds
In lands of the ten quarters
Should not glorify
And praise my Buddhahood Name
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 18
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If sentient beings
In lands of the ten quarters
Who most sincerely
Call my Name only ten times
With highest of faith
And rebirth aspiration
In country of mine
But then are not reborn there
Unless commit sins
Of five greatest offences
Or blasphemes the Law
Or abuses right Dharma
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 19
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If sentient beings
In lands of the ten quarters
Aspire to Bodhi
Awaken Enlightenment
And cultivates good
Does meritorious deeds
With sincere desire
For rebirth in my country
But at death moment
Not see me and assembly
Of many sages
A retinue before them
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 20
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If sentient beings
In lands of the ten quarters
Having heard my Name
Concentrate their thoughts and hearts
On my Buddha-land
Do meritorious deeds
Sends good to my land
With desire to be born there
But not achieve goal
Should they fail at fulfillment
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 21
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
In my Buddha-land
If the humans and devas
Are not all endowed
With thirty two physical
Great Man attributes
Glorious perfect body
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 22
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If Bodhisattvas
In the other Buddha-lands
Of other quarters
Who come visit my own land
Not ultimately
And unfailingly reach Stage
Becoming Buddha
Get perfect enlightenment
After one more life
The perfect enlightenment
May I not attain
Excepted are those who wish
Of their own free will
Teach and guide sentient beings
In accord with vows
Taken originally
They wear the armor
Of great vows they have taken
And accumulate
Merits and varied virtues
Deliver beings
All from cycle birth-and-death
Visit Buddha-lands
To perform Bodhisattva
Practices and make
Offerings to the Buddhas
And Tathagatas
All throughout the ten quarters
Enlighten beings
Those uncountable sentient
Numerous as sands
Of the great River Ganges
And establish them
In the perfect and highest
Of enlightenment
Such Bodhisattvas transcend
The course of practice
Of bodhisattva stages
That ordinary.
Practice Samantabhadra's
Great virtues and vows
Of Universal Worthy

Vow 23
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If Bodhisattvas
In my own Buddha-country
To make offerings
To Buddhas with my power
But is not able
To reach immeasurable
Innumerable
Of kotis of nayuta
Of the Buddha-lands
In time short as to eat meal
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 24
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If Bodhisattvas
In my own Buddha-country
Wish own offerings
When worshipping the Buddhas
Performing good acts
And such things do not appear
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 25
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If Bodhisattvas
In my own Buddha-country
Cannot teach Dharma
With the all-knowing wisdom
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 26
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If Bodhisattvas
In my own Buddha-country
Have not body of
Vajra-god Narayana
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 27
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
Sentient beings should
Even with the divine eye
Able distinguish
By Name and can calculate
And by number all
Myriads of provided
Manifestations
For the humans and devas
In glorious land
Resplendent and exquisite
Beyond description
Is quality of beauty
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 28
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If Bodhisattvas
With little store of merits
Even have the least
In my own Buddha-country
Not able to see
The boundless shining beauty
Of the Bodhi-tree
Of which has countless colors
Four million li high
When I attain Buddhahood
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 29
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If Bodhisattvas
In my own Buddha-country
Not possess wisdom
Or oration eloquence
Upholding sutras
Reciting and expounding
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 30
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If in my country
The wisdom and eloquence
Of the oration
Of the Bodhisattvas there
Should be limited
The perfect enlightenment
May I not attain
When I attain Buddhahood

Vow 31
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If my land not be
Resplendent and revealing
In all of its light
Of the immeasurable
Innumerable
And of inconceivable
Buddha-lands image
Reflected in clear mirror
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 32
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If all myriads
And vast manifestations
From ground to the sky
The magnificent palaces
Towering to void
Pavilions, ponds, streams and trees
Jewels and perfumes
In my land are not composed
Of countless supreme
And most excellent treasures
Surpassing both worlds
Of the humans and devas
And of a hundred
Thousand kinds of fragrant wood
Whose aromatic
Fragrance pervades all the worlds
Of the ten quarters
Causing all Bodhisattvas
Do Buddhist practice
Whose mind can sense fragrant scent
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 33
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
The sentient beings
In the immeasurable
Inconceivable
Buddha-lands of ten quarters
Who my light has touched
Not feel peace and happiness
In bodies and minds
Surpass humans and devas
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 34
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If sentient beings
In the immeasurable
Inconceivable
Buddha-lands of ten quarters
Who have heard my Name
Should not gain Bodhisattva’s
Insight into the
Non-arising of Dharmas
And should not acquire
The deep and profound knowledge
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 35
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
The women in the
In the immeasurable
Inconceivable
Buddha-lands of ten quarters
Who have heard my Name
Awaken aspiration
And rejoice in faith
Turning minds towards Bodhi
Renounce present life
But not be incarnated
Into male body
The perfect enlightenment
May I not attain
When I attain Buddhahood

Vow 36
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
The Bodhisattvas
In the immeasurable
Inconceivable
Buddha-lands of ten quarters
Who have heard my Name
Should not after end of lives
Do always perform
Sacred practices until
They reach Buddhahood
The perfect enlightenment
May I not attain
When I attain Buddhahood

Vow 37
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
Humans and devas
In the immeasurable
Inconceivable
Buddha-lands of ten quarters
Who have heard my Name
Prostrate themselves on the ground
Revere and worship
Rejoice in faith and perform
The duty and practices
Of Bodhisattva
But not respected
By the devas and humans
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 38
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If in my own land
If the humans and devas
Cannot get clothing
As soon as they desire them
Thoughts arise in minds
For fine Buddha robe garments
But not provided
Spontaneously to wear
And if this clothing
Should need sewing or bleaching
Dying or washing
The perfect enlightenment
May I not attain
When I attain Buddhahood

Vow 39
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
Human and devas
Do not enjoy happiness
As great as a monk
The pleasure comparable
Passions exhausted
The perfect enlightenment
May I not attain
When I attain Buddhahood

Vow 40
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If Bodhisattvas
In my own Buddha-country
Wish see glorious
Pure and boundless Buddha-worlds
Of the ten quarters
And not at once behold them
In the jewel-trees
As seeing face reflected
In brilliant mirror
The perfect enlightenment
May I not attain
When I attain Buddhahood

Vow 41
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
The Bodhisattvas
In lands of other quarters
Who have heard my Name
Before becoming Buddhas
Have inferior
Or incomplete sense organs
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 42
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If Bodhisattvas
In lands of the ten quarters
Who have heard my Name
Do not get pure samadhi
Emancipation
And still not able to serve
Immeasurable
Inconceivable Buddhas
The Tathagatas
In just one instant of thought
No lost thought focus
But if their samadi ends
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 43
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If Bodhisattvas
In lands of other quarters
Who have heard my Name
But are not incarnated
As a member of
A great noble family
If at death desires
The perfect enlightenment
May I not attain
When I attain Buddhahood

Vow 44
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If Bodhisattvas
In lands of other quarters
And who hear my Name
But should not rejoice and dance
And Bodhisattva-
Duty practices perform
But still not acquire
Stores of virtues and merits
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 45
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If Bodhisattvas
In lands of other quarters
And who hear my Name
should not attain samadhi
Of universal
Equity and not always
See Tathagatas
The immeasurable and
Inconceivable
Until all those Bodhsattvas
Have become Buddhas
The perfect enlightenment
May I not attain
When I attain Buddhahood

Vow 46
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If Bodhisattvas
In my own Buddha-country
Wish to hear teachings
Spontaneously, but can't
May I not attain
The perfect enlightenment

Vow 47
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If Bodhisattvas
In lands of other quarters
Who do hear my Name
But not instantly reach stage
Non-retrogression
The perfect enlightenment
May I not attain
When I attain Buddhahood

Vow 48
If and when the time
That I attain Buddhahood
If Bodhisattvas
In lands of other quarters
Who do hear my Name
But do not instantly gain
First, second and third
Insights in Dharmas nature
And firmly abide
In truths realized by all
Buddhas of the Law
The perfect enlightenment
May I not attain
When I attain Buddhahood

Sacrificing personal attainment on behalf of all other beings is the mark of a coming bodhisattva.
