THE HEART SUTRA OF PRAJNA PARAMITA

THE HEART SUTRA OF PRAJNA PARAMITA
(©) 2018 by Lance Carlyle Carter

When Bodhisattva
Avalokiteshvara
Was practicing the
Great Prajna Paramita,
Illuminated
The Five Skandhas and saw that
They are all empty,
And went beyond suffering,
Distress and trouble.
Shariputra, form differ
Not from emptiness;
Emptiness does not differ
From form. Form itself
Is emptiness; emptiness
Itself is form. So
Too are feeling, cognition,
Formation, and the
Consciousness. Shariputra,
All Dharmas empty
Of characteristics. They
Are not produced, not
Destroyed, not defiled, not pure;
And neither increase
Nor diminish. Therefore, in
Emptiness there is
No form, feeling, cognition,
Consciousness or of
Sensations, no eyes, ears, nose,
Tongue, body, or mind;
No sights, sounds, smells, tastes, objects
Of touch or mind, or
Dharmas; no eyesight up to
And including no
Field of mind consciousness; and
No ignorance or
Ending ignorance, up to
And including no
Old age and death or ending
Of old age and death.
There is no suffering, no
Accumulation,
No cessation, and no path,
No understanding,
And there is no attainment.
Because nothing is
Attained, the Bodhisattvas,
Through reliance on
Prajna Paramita, are
Unimpeded in
Their minds because there is no
Impediment. They
Are not afraid, and they leave
The false dream-thinking
Far behind. Ultimately
Nirvana! All the
Buddhas of past, present, and
Future who attain
Complete realization
Rely on Prajna
Paramita. So, therefore
Know that the Prajna
Paramita Mantra is
Great Spiritual
Mantra, a Great Bright Mantra,
A Supreme Mantra,
An Unequaled Mantra. It
Removes suffering,
Is genuine and not false.
Proclaim the mantra
Prajna Paramita and
Recite it like this:
Gaté Gaté Paragaté Parasamgaté Bodhi Svaha!
End of The Heart of Prajna Paramita Sutra

Note: The body of this poem uses lines of alternating five and seven syllables. This is an attempt to imitate the Japanese choka, or "long poem" style in English. The mantra in Sanskrit and closing line are 13 syllables.

Since student days at RZC in 1971, recitation of this sutra has been a steady practice. The Kapleau translation has been the most beautiful and dynamic English version I have ever found, and I have looked at many. Each syllable is one beat, with the following exceptions: in the line "parasamgate", "para+sam" is two beats; "radiant" is two beats--ra+diant"; in the line "bodhi svaha", "bodhi" is a drawn-out four beats: two for "bo" and two for "dhi", "sva" is a drawn-out four beats, and the "ha" is an emphatic "HA!" like Qwatz!

Heart of Perfect Wisdom
(Prajña Paramita Hridaya)

The Bodhisattva of Compassion
from the depths of prajña wisdom
saw the emptiness of all five skandhas
and sundered the bonds that cause all suffering.

Know then:
Form here is only emptiness;
emptiness only form.
Form is no other than emptiness;
emptiness no other than form.
Feeling, thought, and choice—
consciousness itself—
are the same as this.
Dharmas here are empty;
all are the primal void.
None take birth or die,
nor are they stained or pure,
nor do they wax or wane.
So in emptiness no form,
no feeling, thought, or choice,
nor is there consciousness.
No eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind,
no color, sound, smell, taste, touch,
or what the mind takes hold of,
nor even act of sensing.
No ignorance or end of it,
nor all that comes of ignorance.
No withering, no death, no end of them.

Nor is there pain, or cause of pain,
or cease in pain,
or noble path to lead from pain;
not even wisdom to attain:
Attainment too is emptiness.
So know that the Bodhisattva,
holding to nothing whatever,
but dwelling in prajña wisdom,
is freed of delusive hindrance,
rid of the fear bred by it,
and reaches clearest nirvana.
All buddhas of past and present,
buddhas of future time,
using prajña wisdom,
come to full and perfect vision.

Hear then the great dharani,
the radiant, peerless mantra,
the Prajña Paramita,
whose words allay all pain.
Taught by highest wisdom,
true beyond all doubt;
Hear and know its truth:
Gate, gate
paragate
parasamgate
bodhi, svaha!
