Rain and snow expected here tonight at our 2500 foot altitude in "the valley", so we are not immune from Winter as some may think. But "Winter" here lasts about 6 weeks, and then I'm planting-out my tomato-seedling-starts, again.

Well that reminds me, what you can do with your Xmas euros

https://www.fuckcancer.org/

Help me celebrate and help others
Not sure what xmas euros are but I spend all my donation money this year but I'll keep it in mind for the next round in 6 months.
We have similair organizations here I sometimes support but the euros are low since 80% of my donations are based on animal rights support.
Great to see the kids taken to a LA hockey game, I have the same dream for little ceasars arena (detroit) but in health that is.
ps does any of the donation money go to cancer research too or is it all spend on "make a wish"?

That which is called the city of illuison contains the two vehicles, the ten stages of a bodhisattva's progress, and the two forms of full enlightenment. All of them are powerful teachings for arousing people's interest, but they still belong to the city of illusion.

That which is called the Place of Precious Things is the real Mind, the original Buddha-Essence, the teasure of our own real Nature. These jewels cannot be measured or accumulated. Yet since they are neither Buddha nor sentient beings, neither subject nor object, where can there be a City of Precious Things?

Still no success on capturing dream pictures, last night was wonderful, the Earth was taken over by plants and animals, and all animals had the power to change to the size of an atom or to giants at will. except the humans. All humans barricaded themselves indoors, I had fun outside taking pictures of frogs towering over houses they had no interest eating me, I know you 'advocate' dreamless sleep but my dreams are fantastic, some real dreaming, magical. Too bad I can paint. Anyhows one of 'these' days I will photograph a giant, or 'unknown' planets. :hatsoff:

The house I'm renting in at the moment has a meditation room. There's a Theravada nun around the way that comes here to hold short retreats.

Good luck with the photography, Marcel, photographing dreams, and planets. Perhaps I can help: I've discovered hundreds of minor planets that way, several trans-Neptunian objects, and have four comet discoveries to my name. I've been privileged to use big hammers (large telescopes), but amateur-sized telescopes can score big, too.

And, I wish you would paint! Anyone can paint. Just assemble the materials, and start, and continue. It's like "meditation" or yoga-practice in that way: "just begin, and continue". ;) For proper meditation, one may need a teacher, but for painting, you do not!

(ha-ha, Marcel: I don't 'advocate" dreamless sleep. But several years ago at ZFI I mentioned -- and you may be remembering this -- that dreamless-sleep was indeed one of the "properties" or facts of the awakened state. I mean, this was my experience for several months. I think there are also some references to dream-less sleep in the older Ch'an and Zen literature, though I don't recall it being mentioned by Western writers, say, in the past 100 years since Buddhist practice has become a little bit known in Western countries to Western people. But I've experienced that it's a part of the landscape of the awakened state each time, for the length of time that the awakened state lasts: weeks; months; etc. "No mind, no dreams", we could say. Or, no illusions/delusions. But it's not permanent, ...in my experience so far)

Yours in sawdust and photographs,

--Joe

Hi Joe,

I don't dream ...but I hasten to add that it doesn't mean I'm claiming to be "awakened"!

Be well and happy,

It's a good and civil disclaimer, Crystal.

Awakening, as I observe and admit, is temporary.

So far.

I think this is good, as it keeps the Bodhisattva on "better terms" with other suffering beings. The excursions or cessations away from suffering, and into the awakened state or awakened condition, are wonderful, and it's possible and easy to help beings reliably there/then, without mistakes. It seems that Bodhisattvas can, with cultivation, come to keep practice on an EDGE, and up to an EDGE, where true Wisdom and true Compassion still arise, but without a slide into Nirvana or a departure from the world.

But this is another conversation! Too many words, not enuf pictures...for this "Photo" thread. ;)

During REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, all humans dream. Not all recall their dreams. I believe my dog and probably most other mammals and birds, as hypothesized by scientists, also dream.

I have not seen studies in sleep-labs of rapid-eye movement during sleep of awakened people. Probably no one has. Until then, it's mere dictum and incorrect to say that "all" people dream.

Many or most animals show rapid-eye-movement episodes during sleep. This may be one thing that sets off humans from other animals: humans may have dreamless sleep when body and mind are in condition to make this so.

The awakened state, then, would seem to be one in which, during sleep, the so-called "alpha" brain waves usually correlated with dream-reports simply do not arise (have no need to arise; serve no needed purpose).

Considering all else in body and consciousness (and unconsciousness?) that is changed in the awakened state (back to one's original nature), it should be no great surprise to learn that it may be so that alpha-wave operation has also ...ceased.

What else may have ceased? Well, suffering. And true Wisdom and true Compassion then freely arise spontaneously and simultaneously in seamless accord with circumstances and in relations with beings. A lot going on, and not going on. And dreaming is conspicuously not going on.
