In Japanese tea ceremonies, some sort of confection (called wagashi), specifically chosen to compliment the season or occasion, is served prior to the tea; the sweetness balances the strong umami taste of the tea, which is never served sweetened.
I now recall a time when I used to sit with a local group and I believe this was explained to some extent. The sitting groups leader, a zen guy who studied with Brad Warner/Nichijima... (however you spell that guys name) and who's wife was Japanese, would bring these confections and serve them with tea. Just regular green tea though, not matcha, and no ceremony.

The palette-preparing pre-tea (vs. apre-ski) confection is called a "tea-sweet", in ordinary English parlance. And maybe it serves other functions too. Tasty. Nice to share ceremoniously. Many varieties are packaged in crinkly cellophane and can be shipped around the world, for consumption. They are not scarce. But I suppose fruit is the unmatched real-McCoy, with the longest history. I always call the bird-hospital here and they pick it up and take great care of them. Don't you have something similair so an animal ambulance comes to pick the bird up?

he is a very young high flyer, prob got lost or chased, so he fell onto my window with a thud, cant land properly..the wild pigeons took no liking to him, iv videod it, so up he comes in..now i have a prob.. its just a little bit.. i wont rant on bout guzzi. hes a dope.
