Thank you Linda.

They also recently released a couple of very interesting short films on Zen in South America, and particularly Brazil, if you are interested in that. An amazing meeting of cultures.

I believe you refer to the Shuso Hossenshiki Ceremony (about the 14:00 mark). Shuso Hossenshiki is a ceremony found traditionally in most Soto Zen lineages, a ceremonial rite-of-passage marking a student’s promotion to the rank of Senior seat (Shuso), meaning something like "Senior Student". It takes place at the conclusion of the intensive training period of Ango during which the Senior Student serves as a model to the sangha or community. ... At the Shuso hossen ceremony, the shuso gives his or her first dharma talk and takes questions from the community in a very ritualized form of Dharma Combat.

However, these days, the Shusho Hossenshiki is more a choreographed and pre-scripted dance, with memorized lines, than real "Dharma Combat." These days in Japan, the Koan "Mondo" or the "Dharma Combat" is now pretty much according to a written script in classical Japanese language that few of the young modern monks can understand (not to mention the Koany content), so rather a bit of theater. Few people even really understand the old language they are speaking ... like the difference between modern English and English during the middle ages. The participants will practice for weeks to memorize their lines, and even the rehearsals have been turned into a ceremony of their own. (Some Western Soto Zen Sangha have actual tried to make their Dharma Combat Ceremonies much more unscripted and spontanteous.)

I used to be more a critic of this. However, a friend who is a "method" actor on Broadway once told me that, by playing Willie Loman in 'Death of a Salesman' one actually embodies and becomes Willie Loman. Here too, like theatre or dance ... it is "real", and people find the meaning within it that one finds in their heart as one brings flesh and blood to the role. By playing on the theatre stage, we really "become" Willie Loman and all that his words contain in life. Likewise, by embodying these Koans on the monastic stage, one becomes these Koans in life.

This is actually also an aspect of the principles of Shikantaza Zazen: By merely assuming the cross-legged body posture of a Buddha, and "method acting" into allowing the mind to assume the peace and equanimity of a Buddha through trust that the act is the fruition, one actually brings Buddha to life.

Yes that part, thank you for the education of ranks and hierarchy, I noticed it was scripted, but would loved to have joined in, non-scripted that is.

Funny enough it's all a movie, was just riding in the dunes and at the intersection a man on a bike and a woman (clearly with mental issues) in a car started to argue because they almost hit each other both screaming it was the others fault, just witnessing the event after a few minutes the woman tried to hit the man with her car and he went beserk threatening to beat her to death (unquote) so that was time for "me" to play a part in the movie, so I walked to the man and said "shall we just enjoy the rest of the day" yes you're right he said but she's crazy, "lets just keep breathing" you're right he said and he drove of. We all play a part eventhough the theatre is empty.

Much ado about no-thing :cat:

Well, Buddhas teach that all this life is thoroughly a dream ... and death is but a dream, those peoples' drama and passing is a dream ... so row row row the boat. One might as well, then, have a dream premonition of what's next in a dream.

In fact, Dogen called this life "a dream within a dream" ... a dream so dreamy that we best dream it well ... a dream so dreamy, that it is as real as real can be ... for though a dream perhaps, it is our dream and our life ... so dream and live it well. (In this "daily life" dream, when we act violently, someone actually gets hurt ... so dream that one is not violent etc.) From Shobogenzo Muchu-setsumu (Expounding a dream in a dream):
The entire world, crystal-clear everywhere, is a dream; and a dream is all grasses [things] clear and bright. To doubt the dream state is itself to dream; all perplexity is a dream as well. At this very moment, [all are] grasses of the “dream state,” grasses “in” [a dream], grasses“expounding” [a dream], and so on. Even as we study this, the very roots and stalks, leaves and branches, flowers and fruits, lights and hues [of our perception] are all a great dream. Never mistake this, however, for a dreamy state.
