Bit over the top to my mind, unless yunmen actually spent time in the company of a dried shit stick

I have a shitstick that I use on occasion, when necessary.
Let’s remember, though, that dried shit does not stick.
(unless already stuck before drying)

Highly probable. I would bet he actually used one every time he had to poop.

Why use a dry stick when there are leaves?

How about a fresh green stick with leaves?

I guess the obvious, first reaction to the koan is what Linda wrote: "everything is Buddha". I thought like that for a long time. Case solved, let's move on to the next one.

But I was wrong. "Everything is Buddha" is bullshit. If everything is Buddha, then a rapist is Buddha as well. And bombs killing millions in war are Buddha, too. Do we really want to say that? Better yet: does it help anyone to say "everything is Buddha"?

Do you see what the koan asks of us? The kind of commitment that we need in order to honor this practice? Saying "everything is Buddha" or playing with words won't do, at all. We need to abandon all distinctions, all views, and become the dried shit stick through and through. And having a glimpse of the shit stick won't do either. It has to be thoroughly resolved. Until there is no doubt.

It's not easy. But it's the only thing we can do.

Yes.. fucking painful too sometimes.. sometimes one slides happily along and even the shit is not smelly, but doesn't seem to last, at least not IME.. But it's the only thing we can do (apart from sticking our heads in sand, that is).

And what if you resolve it, until there is no doubt, that everything is Buddha? Everything Buddha, no Buddha, what's the difference? :D

(He) could as well have said (had he known), "The satellites of Jupiter".

Or, "Toe-Jam".

It's all of-a-piece, I testify.

Practicing professional social work or psychology, a challenge is always how to help effect change or rehabilitate behavior. A first step is to recognize behavior as it is, and that a clinical diagnosis may be warranted. Problems at the higher level of personality disorders are always considered clinical by nature. A clinical diagnosis always requires a different level of response, in so many ways. But in both behavioral and personality-level cases, compassion is called for. This should also be recognized by buddhists, certainly. For some, that may be a challenge. But yes, "everything is buddha". You don't have to "want to" say that, you just have to recognize it, and not try to weed out the bullshitstick parts.
