Okay, call me a cynic?
[SPOILER]

Catch a shooting star and put it in your pocket
And your pants will start on fire
One bird in the hand or two birds in the bush
Neither do you any good, when you're stuck in the quagmire

Show everyone you're not sure that they're telling the truth
Then you can be known as the universal cynic too

Benefit your fellow man with good deeds for the day
And you'll serve your life away
Pennies saved today are pennies still tomorrow
Strewn upon the desk, piled up in the paper weight

Show everyone you're not sure that they're telling the truth
Then you can be known as a universal cynic too

Wipe your opaque eyes and restore your crystal vision
Turn another cheek and exalt in your decision
A bit of exercise for the universal cynic in you

Early to bed and early to rise
Precludes you from seeing the most brilliant starry nights
Sticks and stones can break bones, words can't really hurt
Unless you carry guns and are hungry for a fight

Challenging the standards or questioning the established rules
Trying to understand how they can benefit you

Showing everyone you're not sure that they're telling the truth
Just a bit of exercise for the universal cynic in you
The universal cynic is you
p.s. just a joke, not serious :)

... a Watts quote, which I value, to the effect that the outline of an object is the inline of its background.
What does it mean? In reality, there is no outline, background, foreground. Which would indicate no object, no subject. All mind made perhaps? I’m very curious about the “Form is emptiness. Emptiness itself is form.” assertion as it can be ascribed to the so called physical reality. The structure of impermanence. Did Watts have anything to say about this? I’ve not read any of his work.

Sorry folks, just being honest!
Honesty is nothing to be sorry about.
If I say that honesty and expressing an opinion are not necessarily the same thing, am I just being honest?

Sorry, I would research this, but don't have access to my stored stuff, including the book with that reference, pending move to new home in June.

Outline=inline. To me, it means continuity, joined, implying no ultimate distinction.

Doesn't it bother anyone here that he was a known alcoholic?
Yes. He could talk the talk but didn't walk the walk. Would much rather listen to someone who can do both. :)

What walk?

Was his talking in contradiction with his walking or are you referring to a fabricated superimposed ideal?

For instance I saw a famous respected Zen teacher in Amerika the other day eat an egg, you know what that means?

So projecting my own knowledge of the farming industry unto a Buddhist "do no harm" notion I should suddenly think, oh he's a shitty zen teacher for he doesn't walk the walk? Perhaps I'd rather have him drink a bottle of vodka each day ;)

Alan is not here to "defend" himself. The condition of alcoholism doesn't necessarely mean someone can't be a teacher of Zen (generally speaking) again I'm not familiar with Alan's teachings/observations.

Watts did not claim to be a Zen teacher, but a “spiritual entertainer.”

Thanks for answering my earlier question, I suspected that.
I drank 3 glasses of whiskey a few days ago (with a cigar ofcourse) please no one ever listen to whatever I say about "meditation" :558:

The walk that wise men walk. If you like him, that's fine. Go for it. I prefer people who actually behave appropriately.

Wise man don't judge, they seek to understand. :hatsoff:

Likewise, but not absolutely! (inside reference joke/ me-you-Joe-ZFI relative/absolute similair talk regarding "conduct")

In any case, just sharing.

Judging is entirely appropriate when you are determining who to listen to and who not to listen to, as the Buddha himself taught. :)

On the contrary, it leaves people who talk the talk and walk the walk. :)
