Zen is all of Life

Post by lindama » Wed Jun 26, 2019 5:17 am

Make no mistake.... this is not about zen people. It is zen, feet on the ground. WE don't need more identity spirituality, just like we don't need more identity politics. sigh

What would “identity spirituality” be?

By me, identity spirituality would indicate an extreme polarized view of an individual's spirituality based on practice, affinity, or commitment. Compromise with or validation of these characteristics under a different sect, eg., Soto vs Rinzai, or in broader terms, eg., Tibetan vs Zen, would be less likely. This could lead to a more rigid or even self-righteous presentation of beliefs, such as currently demonstrated in American politics.

Thanks, makes sense. I have seen “practicing identity politics” used as an attack against the political opponent of the day, but never in this context.

To just expand upon Spike's explanation... Sectarianism. We can identify with a particular religion, sect or group just as we can identify ourselves with a political party or nation. This does not mean simply being a 'member', but we compare our group or sect to others in order to feel validated or superior. Triumphalism. It's just another way we divide ourselves and believe those divisions are real. When our team is criticized or insulted we feel it is 'me' that is under attack. When our team is praised or pronounced superior, we feel filled with pride. Tricks of ego.

Hiya, Linda, sat with him a lot, from earliest days in NYC; sat enough. Loved him. May Bernie R.I.P. :namaste: And come back as another Great Bodhisattva... .

Blessings to all his Dharma heirs, and their students! What a legacy... . Incredible. And let's acknowledge Maezumi Roshi as well. ;)

I'm fine with anyone's fabricated identity but the older I get the more allergic I get to group identity, whether it's the local football team or the local zendo here I'm getting too old/tired for that stuff. but I've always enjoyed a solitary life, that is with(out) humans, my days are filled with cats, birds, trees and insects, none of them have to chat about their self-fabricated identity, nor are there bowing and walking rules in relation to buddha statues. Humans just take the fun out of everything, such a draining polluting species :cat:

As Sartre said, 'Hell is other people."

Even better: "Three o'clock is always too early or too late for anything you want to do."
