lol, this afternoon we were just discussing temperature in Phoenix- a coworker and I are slated to go out there for a week in mid/late July- everyone who has been there before likes to tease us about the expected ~120F afternoon temperatures. We are encouraged to buy oven mitts by which to hold the steering wheel...

OTOH theres a nice Rinzai sangha in Phoenix, will be great to attend again.

Some more aphorisms of Okada Torajiro, without commentary, from Von Durckheim's book -- a sampling:

  • " 'The way' -- it is within oneself. If one goes on sitting quietly the way will be revealed."
  • "Until the voice and eyes alter one cannot say that one has sat in the right way."
  • "Seiza means to give up one's 'I' "
  • "The voice must come from the belly."
  • "Never will you reach the way unless you live in the Absolute and away from relativity."
  • "Look to it to be taught as little as possible. If you 'sit' you will understand quite by yourself."
  • "Seiza sets people free."
