Eight Resolutions of Soyen Shaku

First: When I wake up in the morning, I will burn a stick of incense and do
Zazen until it burns down. Then I will change my clothes and commence
my daily tasks.

Second: I will go to sleep at a fixed time every night. I will eat less than I desire.

Third: I will receive my guests as if I were alone, and I will live alone as if I were
sitting with many people.

Fourth: I will not speak what I cannot practice.

Fifth: I will act when opportunity comes only after deep consideration.

Sixth: I will consider it useless to regret the past, but I will think carefully about
my future deeds.

Seventh: I would like to have the will of a hero and the heart of a child.

Eighth: I will go to sleep as if entering my coffin, and I will get out of bed as if
casting off old shoes.
